I would like to update you on the status of the south pond along Harvard Avenue. This pond has a great deal of filamentous green algae as you can see. This will greatly reduce as the winter approaches but will return in the spring due to the large amount of vegetation die-off happening now and over the winter months. To avoid repeated use of copper, green algae should not be addressed again until spring. This small pond will be a problem for a while. It will not look good all the time during this restoration process. Positive effects of restoration management can take a year or more to become readily apparent. We have been working on this pond for a year now and we have made great strides. There are fish in this pond, an aerator to effectively circulate all areas of the pond, probiotics to promote health in the pond, plants to help with water runoff, shade for fish, oxygen to the pond, and reduce direct sunlight to the pond.
The aerator in this pond has already been relocated to another part of the pond. Some of the green algae and decaying plants will also be removed from the perimeter of the pond. Another effective management tool for this pond will be the switching of the current fountain with a new fountain with lower hp so the probiotics and nutrients will be more effective throughout the entire pond. The new fountain will be lit like the current fountain.
The fountain from the south pond will be relocated to the north pond where the fountain is worn out and needs to be replaced. The main pond fountain will get a light kit added to it so it will be lit also. When this project is complete, we will have 3 lit fountains on 3 ponds. The only pond lacking a light will be the south pond by the cow pasture in the Enclave. This fountain light can be budgeted for in the 2021-2022 fiscal year budget.
Please feel free to email the board with any questions or concerns you may have throughout this restoration process. Thank you for your patience. We really appreciate it.
